Each exam is taken awards you a certain number of “ITIL Credits.” To proceed to the next level of training, or gain an ITIL Certificate, a certain amount of credits are required.

ITIL 3 Certification Levels
While Axelos has declared and released some new ITIL 4 certifications, the ITIL v3 certifications are still essential and available to IT professionals over the next year. The final stage of the ITIL 4 certification scheme is not set to launch until 2020, so if you are on the path to ITIL v3 certification. It is worth continuing through those courses as they will turn to the ITIL 4 certification model.
The ITIL v3 qualification uses a modular credit system called the ITIL Credit System. All ITIL and ITIL-related qualifications within the ITIL Credit System are allowed a particular credit value. As those credits are applied, the applicant changes to test for a higher level of certification.
Finally, a total of 22 credits is required to achieve ITIL Expert certification. There is a separate set of requirements for ITIL Master Qualification. Exam takers must already be ITIL Expert certified before they can obtain ITIL Master Status.
1) ITIL Foundation:
ITIL Foundation which scores candidates with two credits consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. No prerequisites are necessary to take this examination. It deals with crucial concepts, elements, and terminology associated with ITIL service lifecycle management.
2) ITIL Practitioner:
ITIL Practitioner was joined in July 2016 and earned candidates three credits to their ITIL Expert certification. It is thought the next step after the ITIL Foundation, which is a necessity. An ITIL Practitioner will be able to describe how to use the ITIL framework to support business purposes and focuses on organizational change management, metrics, measurement, and communication.
3) ITIL Intermediate:
ITIL Intermediate Level, which scores a candidate with 15 or 16 credits, is open to those who have now passed the ITIL Foundation exam and have made an accredited training course. The intermediate level includes two paths: Service Design, Service Lifecycle, with five examinations: Service Strategy, Service Transition, Service Operation, and Regular Service Improvement; and Service Capability, with surveys like Operational Support and Analysis, Planning Protection and Optimization, Release Control and Validation, and Service Offerings and Agreements.
4) ITIL Master:
ITIL Master Qualification needs the candidate to be now ITIL Expert-level qualified. To achieve the ITIL Master Qualification, candidates must describe how they selected and individually applied a principle. Range of knowledge, methods, and techniques from ITIL and to achieve desired business outcomes in one or more practical assignments.
ITIL 4 Certification Paths
The ITIL 4 certification scheme is related to the ITIL 3 certification scheme, but it has been simplified to offer two main classification paths with seven modules total between both certifications. You will grow from the Foundation level to either the Managing Professional or Strategic Leader paths.
1) ITIL Foundation:
No matter which certification path you do too, you will first need to pass the ITIL Foundation module. This first exam covers the core theories and principles of ITIL 4. As an entry-level exam, it’s designed to teach newcomers the fundamentals of ITIL 4 and to certify that even experienced professionals have the foundational knowledge to move onto more advanced certifications.
The ITIL Foundation course gets a place in a classroom over two and a half days. Alternatively, you can also take to self-study using practice exams and other study material from Axelos or third-party providers.
The ITIL 4 Foundation exam was the first to publish on February 28, while the rest of the certifications are supposed to launch in the second half of 2019. Axelos recommends maintaining your ITIL v3 certification path, as credits will give to the transition module for the ITIL 4 certification scheme.
2) ITIL Managing Professional:
The ITIL MP exam is for IT practitioners who work with technology and digital teams over the organization. It includes the knowledge necessary for running IT projects, groups, and workflows using practical and technical skills.
The ITIL master designation needs a strong background in ITSM and excellent hands-on experience working with ITIL, but there is no training course or set syllabus for this designation.
While the ITIL 4 foundations certification has now launched, the advanced modules and designations are not set to launch to late 2019; ITIL Master is set to begin as late as 2020.
ITIL 4 is backward compatible with ITIL 3 — and if you’re currently working towards any v3 certifications, Axelos supports continuing the track to ITIL Expert.
The courses involved in the ITIL 3 exam scheme have been assigned a credit value based on its level of ITIL content.
